• No shadows on the background and the face
• A plain, uniform, white or light-colored background
• Head coverings in passport photos only for religious reasons
• Black and white or color passport photographs are acceptable

• The maximum size is 50 x70mm
• Canadian Passport Photos must be printed on high quality photographic paper
• Photographer’s address is required on the back of one of Canadian Passport photos

2 identical photos produced from the same film, or from the same electronic file capturing the digital image, are required for each passport.

Specifications for photos

Size and paper

• The length of the face on the photo from chin to crown of head (natural top of head) must be between 31 mm (1 1/4 in.) and 36 mm (1 7/16 in.).
• The photos must measure 50 mm X 70 mm in size (2 inches wide X 2 3/4 inches long).
• The photos must be a close-up of the head and shoulders so that the face covers approximately 25% of the photo.
• The photos must be printed on plain, high quality photographic paper. Heavy weight paper is unacceptable.
• Either black and white or color photos are acceptable.

Applying for a permanent resident card (PR Card) — Initial application, replacement or renewal (IMM 5445)
Appendix B: Photo specifications
• The photos must clearly show your face. If you may not remove your head covering for religious reasons, make sure your full facial features are visible.
• Photos must have been taken within the last 12 months to ensure an up-to-date likeness.
• Photos may be either black and white or colour.
• Your face must be square to the camera with a neutral expression, neither frowning nor smiling, and with your mouth closed.

The two photos must:
■ show a full front view of the person’s head showing full face centred in the middle of the photo;
■ be clear, well-defined and taken against a plain white background without shadows;
■ be produced from the same unretouched film or from the same file capturing the digital image or from two identical photos exposed simultaneously by a split-image or multi-lens camera;
■ be original photos (not taken from any existing photo);
■ New: measure between 25 mm and 30 mm (1” and 1 1/5”) from chin to crown (top of hair);
■ have a 35 mm x 45 mm (1 3/8″ x 1 3/4″) finished size;
■ be on photographic paper that has a backing which accepts and retains the date. Photos without this backing are not acceptable;
■ be on prints that are well-fixed and washed to prevent discolouration;
■ bear the date the photo was taken (not the date the photo was printed) directly on the back of one print (stick-on labels are not acceptable).

Canadian Visa Photo

• The frame size must be at least 35 mm x 45 mm (1 3/8″ x 1 3/4″).
• The photographs must show the full front view of the head, with the face in the middle of the photograph, and include the top of the shoulders.
• The size of the head, from chin to crown, must be between 31 mm (1 1/4″) and 36 mm (1 7/16″).
• Crown means the top of the head or (if obscured by hair or a head covering) where the top of the head or skull would be if it could be seen.
• If the photographs do not meet the specifications, you will have to provide new photographs before your application can be processed.
